3 Toxic Things To Replace in Your Home This Fall

It’s finally Fall, and you can start pulling out your pumpkins and sweaters! One of the most fun things about Fall is getting to decorate and spruce up your home for the cooler months. If you’re trying to detoxify your home this Fall while still keeping that Fall essence, here are a few things you should replace.

Fall scented candles and air fresheners

It’s so fun to go to the store and pick out a yummy, Fall scented candle. But don’t be fooled, these are filled with toxic chemical fragrances that can be endocrine disruptors. Scented candles and air fresheners can also release hazardous materials into the air, according to this 2015 study. If you’re looking for a natural alternative, try buying some essential oils like cinnamon & clove to diffuse in your house instead. You can still get that iconic fall smell without all the chemical fragrances and perfumes that mainstream candle companies sell. Something else you could try would be a natural stovetop potpurri, where you simmer things like cinnamon sticks, orange slices, cloves, and apples in a pot on the stove. They smell amazing, and they’re all-natural! Check out this recipe from HomeBakedBliss or check out a local store like Hobby Lobby or Whole Foods for essential oils to diffuse.

Cinnamon brooms

Not only are they toxic to pets, but they can cause a host of allergic reactions because of the fragrances they use. They may seem natural, but they’re not. You can check out this report on Trader Joe’s cinnamon brooms and read about laundry list of flags they have for toxicity and reactions, for both humans and animals. You can actually DIY non-toxic cinnamon brooms at home! Check out this recipe from eHow.com.

Fall scented body products

Again, along the same lines as the candles & air fresheners, body products are filled with fragrances and perfumes that can be endocrine disruptors, especially the ones you find on the shelves at major chain stores. If you really want soaps and lotions with that fall scent, opt for ones that use essential oils to scent their products. Our favorite fall soap right now is our Clove & Cinnamon bar soap, which has that delicious fall scent without any fragrances and perfumes.

We hope these tips help you keep a healthy, cozy home this fall! Found a recipe for one of the items above that you love? Share it in the comments below!
